My Fave Twitter Accounts from Non-Crybaby Losers

The internet got a little duller when President Trump was booted off Twitter. Or as I like to call him, soon-to-be-ex-thank-all-the-stars-and-planets-even-little-Pluto President Trump Poopyhead Esquire. I’m all about dignified political discourse, you guys.

Your obedient servant, A.Ham.

Anyway. I never followed the man on Twitter. There was no need. Whenever he fat-fingered some brain-damaged nonsense into the Twittersphere, I invariably saw the responses, retweets, and I Love Lucy reaction gifs from people I do follow within approximately a nanosecond.

And I did have a guilty habit of checking his blighted feed daily. He was always near the top of my search list, so it was easy to keep tabs on his poorly written proclamations and badly produced propaganda videos, yet by doing so I contributed nothing to his follower count. To this day I don’t understand why more people didn’t do likewise.

I frequently responded to his tweets - to him directly (or, more accurately, to Dan Scavino, the lackey who actually gets paid to type out the swill Trump dictates as it flows unimpeded from drug-addled brain to tiny butthole mouth), and to the myriad trolls, bots, and deeply deluded acolytes who invariably amplified his lies and stroked his flaccid, er, ego. Guys, if you don’t frequent Twitter, you should know this: I’m not always nice on Twitter. I don’t post cute memes or report on what Precocious Daughter is up to or share pictures of monkeys wearing clothes.

I'm a fool for the singerie.

Twitter Chuck is Chuck unfiltered. You can find me at @DrunkBaudelaire if you want to know, or ignore me if you want to preserve the image of me as a little ol' dirtbag blogger with not much to say.

Unfortunately, Twitter does make me angry sometimes. Ask the poor Siamese Kitten, who often gets aggressively skritched as I scroll through utter bollocks from QAnon idiots, alt-right assholes, Constitutional illiterates, and Ted Cruz. I think the Siamese Kitten forgives me my frustrated petting, likely because she expects one day to eat my face when I die alone.

This is what is known as
a mutually beneficial relationship.

But that's not what this post is about. It's not about calling the soon-to-be-ex-etc. POTUS a bloated Nazi, or pointing out that Kim Guilfoyle looks like she can and regularly does put Don Jr.'s entire head in her mouth as a show of dominance, or asking Tom Fitton why for the love of God he can't pay a personal shopper to buy him a shirt that fits when he shows up on Fox News to say crazy things.

No, this post is about the Twitter accounts that actually don't make my eyes hurt and my blood simmer.

This is a shout-out to the people and aliases whose opinions, humor, and outlook on life I unironically love and respect. It's hard to do anything unironically on Twitter, you guys. On a platform where people guilelesssly post "succeed" when they mean "secede," or castigate black athletes for disrespecting the American flag while cheering on insurrectionists who literally beat law enforcement officers with a pole carrying the same flag, a healthy sense of irony is all that stands between me and a straitjacket emblazoned with "I Really Don't Care Do U?"

Apparently this means "complicit" in Slovenian.

But let's forget all that for a moment. Here are a half-dozen Twitter accounts that make me smile on the regular. That's a very big deal. They may also educate and elucidate, and that's just icing on the social-media cake. But mostly, they're what I dare to call kindred spirits on the journey to all the better tomorrows I hope to see. I want to say thanks and give a virtual fist-bump to them all. Please give them some love if you see them in Twitterville.

In no particular order:

Daniel Dale @ddale8
Daniel is the king of the fact-checkers. A Canadian journalist whose tweets CNN quoted so often they finally hired him. So thorough, it's exhausting to read his work sometimes. He also features his adorable Pomeranian Breezy on a regular basis. Latest tweet:

Devin Nunes' cow @devincow
Devin Nunes is a Republican Congressman who is both unethical and not particularly bright. He likes to sue people for reasons that can only be described as baffling. One time he sued a Twitter account that facetiously claimed to belong to a cow on his family's dairy farm. That account, Devin Nunes' cow, is a sharp, witty, accurate source of information on all kinds of government shenanigans, not just Rep. Nunes'. Cow is badass. I like Cow. Latest tweet:

Phil Sledge @Phil_Sledge
Not all my favorite Twitter feeds are political, or from well-known people (or bovines). Phil is a British gentleman who loves dogs, particularly Basset hounds, which immediately endeared him to me. His videos and captions are always good for a smile. Latest tweet:

Men Write Women @menwritewomen
The fact that many male writers - from hacks to bestselling authors - are unable to create female characters who function outside the sphere of their own social and sexual biases is both hilarious and infuriating. This account presents ample (like boobies, get it?) evidence of the phenomenon. It also regularly promotes smart and inclusive writing along with the snark. The tweet that started it all:

Random Snake Facts @random_snakes
One of my newest favorites. This account serves up two of my favorite things: Political snark and pretty sneks. They regularly highlight examples of ignorance and ineptitude that need to be "snaked TF out" and then oblige with gorgeous pictures of, and facts about, snakes from around the world. Highly recommended. Latest tweet:

Becky Holmes hates spinach @deathtospinach
Becky has a singular talent for attracting DMs from men who are both mentally and physically, shall we say, under-endowed. Rather than merely being disgusted by unwanted dick pics, she responds to her online suitors with hilarious results. Even though Becky artfully censors the wee willies, this is definitely a NSFW account. And she's working on a book! Recent tweet:

This barely scratches the surface of accounts that make swimming into the Twitter cesspool worthwhile. If this post gets any traction, I may post a sequel. In the meantime, thanks to all these fine folks. Love you mwah mwah mwah.

Tuesday Endorsements

I have five things to endorse today.

1) The Bai TV commercial featuring Christopher Walken and Justin Timberlake. This is off the freaking chain. Precocious Daughter recently stopped drinking soda and has switched to Bai. I continue to suck down Coke Zero, and also I'm not an *NSYNC fan. But anything that CWalk and PDaughter like, I will support.

2) Cold pork 'n beans. Not just room temperature, but actually stick-a-can-of-Van-Kamps-in-the-fridge cold. I'll eat 'em room temperature, I'll def eat 'em heated up. But coooooold p'n'b reminds me of my childhood and makes me happy.

3) Chopped Jr. Yes, the Food Network show. Over the past 25 years I've become a pretty damn decent scratch cook. But when I was in middle school? I could not have turned fried pickles and mole sauce into a Korean-infused entree. Hell, I couldn't do that now. Mad props to these kids. Also, it's hosted by Ted Allen, who always was my favorite Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

4) Claude Taylor. If you're on Twitter and haven't followed this former White House staffer-cum-artist-cum-SJW, you should. His nose for new is razor-sharp, particularly when it comes to the latest Trump intel. Also, he seems like a genuinely nice guy.

5) Otters. Why we can't all be more like otters? Feisty, smart, loving, and adorable af. Just saying.

What five things do you recommend today? Share, please.

This Land Was Made for You and Me...No, Really

Guys, over on Twitter I've been retweeting a specific post all day.

It's from U.S. Representative Steve King (R-IA). Who is pretty much a known right-wing straight-up racist.

White af, thank you.

Today he tweeted a statement that has left many individuals and news outlets in a state of confusion and outrage.

Here it is:

Read that last sentence again, and again.

"We can't restore our civilization with somebody else's babies."

What. The. Actual. Fuck.

My Precocious Daughter - my blue-eyed, blonde, 10,000% American child - is the product of immigrants from five countries. She is the descendant of German, Polish, English, Italian, and Irish people who came to America for a better life.

She is NOT "somebody else's babies."

She is currently dating an outstanding young man whose family emigrated here from Colombia. He was in middle school when they arrived in Texas. At the time, he spoke not a word of English. He is currently ranked second in their junior class. He and his parents are among the sweetest, smartest, warmest people I've ever met.

He is NOT "somebody else's babies."

I have a dear friend and former co-worker who came to America from Nigeria. He and his (American) wife have two gorgeous children. What I love about him is that he speaks and writes
impeccably in English, but on Facebook he communicates with his Nigerian friends in a patois that is basically unintelligible to me. It makes me so happy that he embraces both cultures while being a genuinely decent, nice person to everyone.

He is NOT "somebody else's babies" (nor are his children).

Rep. King, you are quite simply wrong when you state that this country needs to be "restored." We are fine. We are strong. We are evolving, despite efforts by you and your ilk to pretend we are not.

Also, you are incredibly ignorant if you believe the majority of Americans are somehow "pure" and not the descendants of immigrants from all over the globe. My ancestors totally did not sail here aboard the Mayflower, nor did the ancestors of the vast majority of people I know.

Finally, what the eff do you want to "restore" America to? An America without feminism, without civil rights, without racial equality, without tolerance and acceptance of people whose religion, politics, and sexual identity differs from yours?

That's not restoration, Mr. King. That's fear. And bullying. And cowardice.

Your blatantly nationalist, racist tweet will, I hope, define you from this point forward. In the meantime, millions of concerned Americans will fight to shout down your bigoted beliefs.

Restore America, my left buttock. Real Americans need to reclaim the idea of an accepting, inclusive America from troglodytes like you. Sir..

A few of my readers may agree with me.

Along with several million of my countrymen, born from "other people's babies."

Pimping for Toofer

So, you guys, here's what happened today.

I mean, lots of stuff happened today. I waded through a million emails that accumulated at work because I took one lousy Friday off. I tried and failed to visit with my big sis (schedules are complicated, right?). I bought groceries. It was just a day full o' fun.

But this also happened on my Twitter account.

Who is Keith Powell? If you are a hug fan of the late, great "30 Rock," then all I have to say is: Toofer.

I could also say "Shut up, Lutz," and you would just know.
Anyway, Keith Powell is a talented actor and comedian who played James "Toofer" Spurlock in one of my all-time favorite sitcoms. And totally and completely out of the blue, he followed me on Twitter today.

And then this happened.

And then THIS happened.

Yeah, Toofer not only followed me, but also liked my Tweeted reaction to his follow.

Whoooo! Right?

OK, well then, a while later I received this not-at-all-a-robo-message in my DMs.

So basically, Keith Powell (or his social media intern) is following random semi-humorous bloggers with Twitter accounts in order to drum up buzz for his new web show. The idea is that some random obscure easily-starstruck dweeby blogger in Texas will be so blown away at being followed by a CELEBERTY that she will totally spread the word about the new series "Keith Broke His Leg" at GetBroken.com.

Which, as you can see, is spot-on strategy on his part.

Look, in the game of pseudo-viral marketing, I am the ideal mark. I'm insecure, desperate for attention, and utterly mad about the concept of celebrity. So if an actor who played a secondary character in a cult TV show wants to trade his acknowledgement of my existence for a plug on a little-read blog, I'm in. Watch "Keith Broke His Leg" at GetBroken.com, you guys. I totally will, when I have a moment.

Remember, I received no compensation for this promotion, apart from the shallow thrill of being followed by a reasonably famous actor. Which is more than enough for me. That follow, plus 40 hours a week of hard work at an office job, totally pays the rent and buys, like, milk and shit.

Watch "Keith Broke His Leg" at GetBroken.com.

Love you, Toofer.

*on foot*

*curses colorfully*

I Don't Like Guns, So I Have to Think with My Brain

@OpenCarryTexas has blocked me on Twitter!

I kind of needed the ego boost today, so thanks.
It all started last weekend when I responded to their posting of the 37,412th version of their rallying cry:

Russell Dunnachie is the Arlington, Texas man who was murdered, along with his daughter, by his estranged wife Veronica Dunnachie, who happens to be a very active member of the Open Carry movement.

Her last Facebook profile pic.
If you'll follow the link in the previous paragraph, you'll see many instances of her prominently featured in Open Carry events in the DFW area.

This one even has the Open Carry Tarrant County watermark on it,
because they're proud of being armed to teeth at Super Target.
Of course, after a flood of vaguely worded messages of shock and support, all traces of Veronica Dunnachie have now been removed from the Open Carry Texas and Open Carry Tarrant County Facebook pages. Because those groups apparently didn't appreciate the publicity they were getting because one of their members decided to openly carry a gun into the home she previously shared with her husband and gun down two people.

Best/saddest/now deleted comment to this OCTC Facebook post:
"But her mother-in-law did." Amen.
So I decided to open a dialogue with @OpenCarryTexas about their campaign to erase their affiliation with and support of an accused murderer from their social media sites.

Now, it was a Friday night, and I was tired, so I went to bed at a reasonable hour. Yeah, my social life is shit. But OCT's can't be much better, because the next day I found this string of tweets directed at me:

I was so tickled! All that for little old me? You could tell that C.J. Grisham, or whichever of his trained monkeys mans the @OpenCarryTexas Twitter page, spent a lot of time and thought crafting these responses. Or looked them up in their "Risponding too the Medea" guide. Whichever. I felt badly for not being awake to immediately take up this intelligent debate of the issue at hand (the issue being that a person who advocated OCT's mission of desensitizing the public to the presence of weaponized people  in their midst extrapolated that mission to mean unloading her magazine at people who displeased her).

So I tried to make up for my tardy response with thoughtful rejoinders.

These are in the same order as the original queries, if you want to match them up.

I gotta say, I was a little crushed that I didn't hear back.

And then I discovered this.

And that kind of bums me, because I thought we had a real rapport. But I guess @OpenCarryTexas is less interested in rapport than it is in pretending that the America they live in actually agrees with their selfish, violent, bullying tactics.

I'm totally still willing and open to engaging in a mutually respectful exchange of viewpoints, as I think I expressed in my latest tweet:

I'd love to hear from a representative of the group to find out how they're going to steadfastly further their agenda while expressing appropriate responsibility for the actions of one their members. I think it would make for an enlightening conversation and a mutually beneficial airing of opposing ideas. I welcome that input.

For the record, I also believe I'm more likely to be harassed and intimidated (up to and including being shot just like Russell Dunnachie) than I am to ever be party to such a conversation.

Still, where there's life there's hope.

My condolences to the family of Russell Dunnachie, to whom I wish hope even where the lives of two loved ones have been stripped from them by an unstable person with an unhealthy affinity for deadly weapons.

Gonna Get Hooked

Something very, very exciting is happening this Thursday.

imagerymajestic/FreeDigitalPhotos.netWay more exciting thanDouchebag Karaoke Night.
NBC is presenting a live musical production of Peter Pan on Thursday night. Remember last year, when NBC presented The Sound of Music Live, with Carrie Underwood playing a piece of cardboard playing Maria?

Her performance would have been 300% better if Mel Brooks
had dubbed in "Don't be stupid, be a smarty,
come and join the Nazi party." Over every one of her lines.
Even though I hate and loathe The Sound of Music, last year's live production was incredibly entertaining. The Internet went on a live-blogging/tweeting spree and made everything better. That's what the Internet does. That's what it's for.

Imagine how much better the Watergate hearings would have been
with a live Twitter feed. #IAmNotACrook
(Look it up, children.)
With Peter Pan, I'm looking forward to actual, unironic enjoyment of at least part of the show. The reason, of course: Christopher Walken as Captain Hook.

"I carried this hook in my ass for two years..."
I'd just to like to say without hyperbole that this is the best casting decision ever made in the history of stage performance.

Also, this is the best GIF in the history of GIFs.
On Thursday night, I'm going to riff Peter Pan on my Facebook page and Twitter. How can I not? I'm counting on it to be completely awesome. Which certainly doesn't mean I'm counting on it to be good, unless by "good" we're talking about "so preternaturally bad that Jesus comes back early just to check it out." That would be fine, too.

There's just one thing. Last year when I live-blogged The Sound of Music, I was BUI (blogging under the influence). The vodka was flowing, and it definitely helped my enjoyment of the proceedings, not to mention my ability to turn off my mental filters and write whatever popped into my head every three minutes or so.

Stuart Miles/FreeDigitalPhotos.net
Most useless, annoying button since that dumbass
Windows key.
When Peter Pan airs, I'll have been sober for more than 13 weeks - a full three months. To be honest, at this point I'm not drinking primarily because I'm enjoying all the weight I've lost. I feel no moral imperative to stay on the proverbial wagon. On the other hand, I feel no particular urge to go back to consuming nightly doses of vodka that would impress Vladimir Putin. There were definite downsides to that behavior.

But you know...I might really have a great time riffing on Peter Pan with a drink in my hand. Frankly, you all might get a kick out of it, too. I can't imagine that a singing, dancing Christopher Walken in full pirate regalia wouldn't be 15 to 25 times more amazing with the help of a little potato juice.

Hell, how do we know he won't be lit while he's performing?
Like, for the last 40 years?
So...I don't know. Some of you expressed pretty clear opinions about my alcohol consumption after I stopped. Your concern was very much appreciated, and I don't want to disappoint those of you who took the time to care about my well-being.

Still, drunk-blogging sounds like a lot of fun for everyone.

I don't know. Weigh in, dear readers?

Either way, I hope you'll join me.
