I Don't Know If I Can Drink To This

My eldest nephew turned 21 today.

This image is called "Shocked Emotiguy," and I
just love that for some reason.
I was in the delivery room when he was born. I held him in my arms on his first day on this Earth. I changed his diapers, warmed his bottles, hugged him literally every single time I saw him.

And now he can legally drink.

Alcohol. Just so we're clear.
My eldest nephew is 21 years old. My big sister has a child who is old enough to drink. I have a nephew who is old enough to drink.

What does that make me?

An ancient artifact, yes.
He is a spectacular young man, by the way. He is handsome, smart, hard-working, interesting, funny. I couldn't be more proud of him if he were my very own child.

Yet I'm the aunt of a grown-ass man now.

My sis has three other kids. They will turn 21 in 2, 4, and 6 years, respectively.

And my own Precocious Daughter will be 21 in 6 years, as well.

I have no idea what to do with that knowledge.

Anyone?

I am stumped.

Happy 21st Birthday, my wonderful nephew. I'll drink a toast to you...but I can't handle you joining in.

  1. What you do with the knowledge that you and those you care about are getting older is share it with those pesky kids. You're setting an example by showing them that even if aging ain't always pretty you can still be cool and funny regardless of your age.

And tell 'em that they should never, ever drink too much, even though you occasionally do. They should consider themselves lucky that you're giving them an example of what not to do.

You're thinking it, you may as well type it. The only comments you'll regret are the ones you don't leave. Also, replies to threads make puppies grow big and strong.
